ruairi kennedy is klose one, a fierce and respected dj with a history of playing some of the finest pirate stations out there (including currently hosting the school records show on rinse) and is renowned for his outstanding sets at major festivals and clubs. now turning his hand to production, his debut comes on loefahs co-run label school records and follows previous eps from dusky and paleman. this to-the-point two tracker offers a brace of raw tracks that straddle the divide between the rawest vibes house, bass and techno have to offer and makes no compromises along the way.

hot on the heels of their recently released label compilation we make colourful music because we dance in the dark, and an ep from new talent tcts, london via berlin collective greco-roman get set to release *our town* by letthemusicplay featuring kate tempest. starting out as a teen rapper in lewisham and now hailed by the guardian as one of the brightest british talents around, 27 yearold south london spoken word phenomenon kate tempest has been causing a stir at poetry slams and performances up and down the uk, from glastonbury festival to the edinburgh fringe. this year saw her self-penned performance piece brand new ancients claim the ted hughes award for innovation in poetry – making her the first person under 40 to do so – and shortly after her victory she was one of eight poets commissioned to perform at the hayward gallerys light show in london.

having previously reissued *i want you to know*, the 1991 gem from simonellis groove committee project, deep down slam now return with a remix package. leading the way is italian house producer nicholas in collaboration with marcoradi, with the original s vibe very much intact but complemented by some fresh new beats and arrangement. the second remix comes from french house producer dj steaw who brings the usual quality and gives the remix the classic steaw touch we re used to know. zurich based italian producer demetrio giannice conjures the spirit of vintage tom moulton on his remix and deep down slam have also included simonellis original bonus beats version from 1991 that was mastered by legendary nyc mastering engineer rick essig.

after re-launching touchin bass with two killer eps from quinoline yellow and plaster, we are now celebrating 12 fine years by bringing you an 11 track compilation featuring tracks from some old friends of the label as well as introductions to some new. this compilation *present tense* sets out to recapture some of the essence of the past but also launches you into the future with some innovative and talented artists from all around the globe.

touching upon dance musiculatory milestones like detroit techno and electro, nsyde007 sees tyon, a well-known but besides this moniker for now anonymous traveller, summoning up atmospheres totally his own. this is space music. but not in the ra sense. take the a-side flaw 11, for instance. this is space music in the way it catapults you out, like the most terrible mistake made by man-machine, into the farthest reaches of an ever faster expanding universe, dark energy tearing at your nipples until they rip off, resemblances of melody orchestrating the drama/bliss of event horizon passage. its dark yet beautiful, like the smile on a dying persons face, and a heavily psychedelic trip at that – but fear not! you won’t be subjected to any despicable noodleage here, just to weird, intensely warped sounds you want to dance your ass off to. make it fat on the other side is the sci-fi equivalent to hänsel und gretel: a perpetuating feeding of the child-to-be-eaten. the finest in andromeda’s hyper-fattening molecular cuisine gets crammed into the gagging brat as doom is looming over its forehead. and with every spoon thats being recklessly punched into the poor little demon’s face it is getting closer to its, as well as the dancers ultimate goal: total nirvana. pressed on black vinyl.

scotland-born parisian paradise 100 (a.k.a. dj africa, a.k.a. graham peel) has been percolating stripped-back, bouncy-castle house constructs onto the web for a few years but never locked them in wax until now. high time. following his minimalist dictum *more than three tracks on a song is just indulgence*, his debut eps four cuts share a sleek, spare design, jigsawing slinky bass, classic keys, lean drum programming and flashes of synth mirage into fluid, aerodynamic patterns. touches of melodic acid and crossover new wave color the mood an exotic, hedonistic hue (further evinced by titles like the loin king and french kissing in the house of love). his own vision of the project is appropriately fantastical: *the image in my mind is of tropical forests at night, torchlight, distant sounds of tribal ritual dance and ghosts.* regal music for pleasure domes.

top quality reissue of one of the holy grails of the deep house scene - the original deep south recordings release of mission controls classic *outer limits*. originally released in 1990, this floor-filling gem is one of the earliest productions by murk’s ralph falcon and one of his finest. with its deep analogue bass and cool spoken word vocals, it went on to become an underground classic and is now hugely in-demand with djs and collectors. on the flip is the often overlooked brilliance of *give yourself* by the other murk partner oscar g, a bass heavy slo-mo groover that just sounds incredible loud. absolutely essential, do not sleep!

german techhouse producer marco riemann is back on imola-music with*klangzeit*, cooperation with internationally known producer someone else! after two releases on steve bugs pokerflat, *klangzeit* is now marcos latest releases on his own label imola-music which he manages together with the cologne producer jens zimmermann. all tracks on *klangzeit* are straight forward minimal-/techhouse stuff which are clearly oriented to clubs peaktime. the beats and hooklines are stripped down to the minimal bones which sucks you into its groove from the first kick drum beat.

ma spaventi, a roman, now based in amsterdam, has been around for a minute, his trio r-a-g (with aroy dee and gijs poortman, a.k.a. gstring) has been recording refined, classicist house and techno on an all-analog kit since 2010. marked by tough drums, swirling pads, and a willingness to veer into pure, beatless ambient territory, their records are formally purist without scrimping on a sense of mystery. spaventis solo work so far has suggested that he may be the tough guy of the bunch.

in the 1970s the american composer henry flynt started a series of pieces under the title >new american ethnic music<. in so doing he worked together native styles of music such as blues, country or hillbilly with electronic production methods to make something altogether new. so far in germany it has never been attempted to rework folklore electronically for a compilation. however, this picture changes if one redefines the idea of who the population is. incomers have brought new >national anthems< to germany, which means - even the portuguese fado, the african gnawa, the croatian klapa or the vietnamese quan ho are these days at home in germany. with the cultural project >heimatlieder aus deutschland< (native songs from germany) founded by former spex editor mark terkessidis and label manager jochen kühling all the various styles of traditional folk music now found in germany has been collected. thirteen of the songs recorded for the project have now been transformed by contemporary electronic producers to present a >new german ethnic music<. but why remixes? for one thing electronic music has recently focused a lot on the past (ghost music, hypnagogic pop etc.) – electronic editing is well suited to follow the effects of the immigrant music which the >imaginary national anthems< has created. furthermore the projects instigators were curious how >electronic musicians< would handle folk music and folk songs which is a hugely difficult task. to this end artists were sought out who could get along with the idea of each music style and who are known to already have experimented with the human voice. the results are as varied as the music styles and djs involved. some melodies remain completely intact while others are abstracted beyond recognition. margaret dygas associative approach ensured that she presents a polish song about a girls arranged marriage with a claustrophobic feeling. with his remix of the marrabenta of mozambique mark ernestus has continued the rhythmic experiments he is known for with jeri jeri. thomas mahmoud translated gnawa into dub and finaly ulrich schnauss turned the song of the italian chorus of >donni so< into a hymn for the horizon-expanding power of migration.hopefully this compilation will also expand some horizons.

after the huge success of degree 002 by nick curly, which was played a lot on the hot summer festivals 2013, the label now comes up with its 3rd cracker called >nature calls ep< of the three romanian guys horatio, elchinsoul and gruia. three well-known artists, who will again let degree impact on the dancefloors around. despite the stylistic variety of three producers, a clear golden thread runs through the sound. it combines the sultry soul of romania and lets the blood boil in your veins. all in all degree again releases a totally different record, which however has its typical style. high-class sound which is told by artists, who tell more than just one story. a powerful ep for each moment in life and on the dancefloor.
